Can Men Fake an Orgasm?

By Tatyana Dyachenko

We tend to think that orgasm is a fairly straightforward process for men. They get an erection, apply a little friction and the job’s done, right? Well, you might be surprised to learn that an ever-growing number of men are suffering from delayed ejaculation (DE) and are resorting to their very own Meg Ryan, from When Harry Met Sally, impressions. In fact, according to Ask Men’s 2010 ‘Great Male Survey’, a shocking 30% of men admitted that they’d faked an orgasm.

Why do Men Fake Orgasm?

On the whole, the motivation for faking an orgasm is the same for men and women. The ‘faker’ doesn’t want to bruise the ego or hurt the feelings of their lover. However, this potential for knocking a lover’s confidence is even more pertinent when you’re talking about a woman not able to make her partner climax. After all, as mentioned above, orgasm is simple for men, at least that’s what is commonly believed.

In addition, sexuality is a big part of the way men perceive themselves, especially in relation to other men. Therefore, any kind of sexual ‘dysfunction’, is likely to be swept under the carpet and certainly never spoken of.

Why Do Some Men Find it Hard to Orgasm?

Delayed ejaculation is believed to have many causes. In most cases, it is unlikely to be one factor, but a combination of issues. Some of the main contributors are:

  • The use of antidepressants
  • Stress or anxiety
  • The Proliferation of porn
  • Too much masturbation
  • Consumption of alcohol

Also, it’s worth bearing in mind that, unlike us, men are really only designed to have one orgasm. They might have a second in them, if they’re lucky. However, orgasm usually leaves a man very drowsy. So, if you’re into a marathon sex session, he is unlikely to be able to orgasm three, four, five or six times. Consequently, rather than disappoint you or hurt your feelings, he may fake it.

How to Tell if a Man is Faking an Orgasm

Well, there is one very obvious way to tell if a man has faked an orgasm! Therefore, typically, if a man senses he has a problem with delayed ejaculation, he will prepare by wearing a condom. If you and your lover don’t usually use condoms, his sudden desire to wear one, may raise some suspicion.

Like women who fake orgasms, men can also ham it up. Too much moaning and thrashing around may well indicate that he is acting (badly!). In fact, any behavior that it is out of the ordinary might suggest that he hasn’t really climaxed. For example, if he usually passes out after orgasm, but, suddenly wants to snuggle, it might raise questions. And vice versa, if he usually continues to kiss and caress you after he’s climaxed and, instead, distances himself from you, it could be indicative of a problem.

If you think your lover might be faking orgasm on a regular basis, you should try to discuss it with him. However, be tactful about the way you approach the subject and, most importantly, don’t take his lack of ability to climax as a slight on your sexual performance.
