Charity Shop Says No Thanks To Sex Toys

By Tatyana Dyachenko

As the New Year is here, more and more families will be sorting through their things and hoping to help the less fortunate by donating goods to charity. While it’s all the name of goodwill – a local New Zealand charity shops says “no thanks” to used sex toys that they keep receiving.

"We get lots of vibrators,'' said Mike Rolton of Hamilton's St Vincent de Paul Charity Shop. "They are usually hidden amongst something and the people looking through it go ''Argh. What's this?''

Charity shops across the globe encourage nearby residents and do-gooders to donate their used clothing, bedding and furniture towards those less fortunate – especially at winter time when poorer communities could use a few extra layers to fend off the cold. Many local residents respond with enthusiasm – after all, it’s a great way to clean out and clear up for the New Year. However, donating your used vibrators to charity is a definite no-no.

The same goes for unwanted sex toy gifts – even if they are in the original packaging and are unopened. If you are not able to return it to the shop, you should consider recycling your unwanted sex toys. About 30% of the goods that the charity receives goes straight to the tip – including unwanted sex toys – which can be exceptionally costly. ''Just in Hamilton it would cost us five and a half to six grand to dump,” added Rolton.

If you want to get rid of your unwanted sex toys and dispose of them safely, send them in for recycling using the Peaches and Screams recycling scheme. You’ll also get 10% off your next order – regardless of where you purchased them from initially.
