What Does It Mean to Be Bisexual?

The term is commonly used to refer to people who have a sexual attraction to more than one gender. Some people describe them as people who have a sexual attraction to both males and females. Others refer to them as people attracted sexually to people of their own gender. Generally, bisexuality comes with numerous definitions. However, it now depends on how you determine your sexuality.

The Myths and Misconceptions About Bisexuality

You will always encounter different myths and misconceptions about bisexuality, which is right until proven otherwise. This article can help you understand more about bisexual people and the bisexuality myths debunked to this day. There is a lot to know about these people and how to make your loved ones understand their sexual desires. Here are the myths and misconceptions you can come across daily;

Bisexuality is Just a Phase

Most people believe that bisexuality is a phase, sexual orientation myths and facts these people go through before transforming to gayism or lesbianism. Just like some people are identified as straight before joining the LGBT community is the same way with bisexuals. Most people are often identified as bisexual before being categorized. Moreover, others are identified as gays or lesbians before identifying with bisexuals. Additionally, bisexuality is unique in its form as it identifies the fluid nature of emotions, sexual attraction, and romance. However, this doesn't mean that bisexuality should be criminalized. Therefore, any bisexual should be respected.

All Women Are Bisexual

According to people's understanding, there are only bisexual women and no bisexual men. It is irresponsible and disrespectful when people judge a person’s sexuality. By so doing, they dismiss an individual's self-identity and experience of any person in the LGBT community. For instance, some females are attracted to their gender, and some are attracted to males and females. On the other hand, some men are only attracted to females, others to men mentally and not physically, while some are attracted to both males and females. Therefore, it is wrong to declare that someone isn't sexually oriented. People’s identifiers and romantic inclinations are valuable and unique, so they deserve respect.

One Cannot Identify As Bisexual Unless They Have Been In A Relationship With Both A Man and a Woman.

Most people often identify their sexuality as either gay or lesbian before going into a relationship. It works the same way for those who can identify themselves as straight or gay at a young age. Therefore, having a romantic experience with either gender or both genders before you identify as bisexual is unnecessary. Furthermore, when bisexual people are married, their sexual orientation remains the same.

One Cannot Identify as Bisexual Unless they Like Men and Women Equally

It isn’t a strange thing in bisexual people. You are likely to find someone attracted to males and occasionally females and vice versa. Moreover, some bisexual people prefer dating gender non-conforming partners or genderqueer. The bisexual people's spectrum has different kinds of people’s preferences. Generally, attraction to people of two or more gender is one of the common features bisexual people share.

Bisexual People Are Promiscuous/Immoral or Polygamous

Most bisexual people are in committed, monogamous, and loving relationships. Surprisingly, most of these bisexual people end up getting married. This means that they aren't the people and will engage in several relationships simultaneously as gays and straights. Moreover, they aren't deceiving, less safe, or immoral. Bisexual means being sexually attracted, not exclusively to people of one particular gender.

Bisexuality is Transphobic

Most bisexual people are closely connected to transgender people. This means most bisexual people are transgender, and they end up dating transgender people. Therefore, bisexual people aren't monosexual. Also, they are attracted to the opposite gender or people of the same sex.

Bisexuals Aren’t as Oppressed as Lesbians and Gay Men

It is typically not true that most bisexuals aren't as oppressed as gays or lesbians because they are half straight. Most bisexual people often struggle to fit in both gay and straight communities. Moreover, they also face discrimination that lesbians and gay people often face. However, they don’t hide their identities under heterosexuality more compared to gays and lesbians.

Bisexual People are Selfish

This is typically not true, especially when it comes to bisexual relationships. The thing that bisexual people are afraid to be replaced isn't true. Like other relationships, the bisexual relationship has the same logic. Moreover, in a bisexual relationship, you have to commit to your partner fully.

Final Thoughts

Bisexuality is valid, it's time to debunk the myths, being identified as bisexual was never easy, as most people feared being discriminated against. However, things have greatly changed today, and people have learned to appreciate others’ sexual attractions.
