Does Being In A Relationship Improve All Aspects Of Your Life

By Elena Ognivtseva

There’s no doubt that being free and single can be a lot of fun. Playing the field, flirting with everyone in sight and saucy one night stands are all well and good, but after a while it does start to get old for women AND for men. Eventually we all want the passion, companionship and stability which a committed and loving relationship can bring.

A recent study by a popular online dating site has revealed that those of us who are lucky enough to be in a healthy and passionate relationship may well look at the world in a completely different way. Spoken for people tend to enjoy their work more, feel more financially stable, and see themselves as being more attractive and sexy. Being in a relationship may even make your relationship with your family better, although I’m not quite sure how this one works.

The research also exposed some very interesting statistics and facts. Apparently 93% of singles are actively looking for a long term relationship, and over 20% of these single people would even consider moving to another location in order to find love! This last fact got me thinking. As a new Londoner (we moved to north London in September), I was very interested to hear that London singles are now the most lonely people in the UK with the smallest chance of actually meeting someone special. This really did surprise me due to the sheer amount of people living in this fantastic city and the myriad opportunities to socialise and enjoy yourself. However, when I really thought about it I guess it started to make sense. It seems like everyone is in so much of a rush here; people barge past you in the street, through a hissy fit if they miss the tube (even though there’s another one in 2 minutes!) and seem to be obsession to fast food. Londoners seemingly do not have time to eat never mind date, so isolation and loneliness is bound to be the result.

So what are busy singles to do? My advice would be to prioritise your wellbeing a little more! If you are single and want to find someone special then make this one of your goals. I’m not saying that you should knock work down your list of important task, but I would say that it’s acceptable to leave on time a few days a week for dinner dates etc. If you don’t have time to meet people in normal social situations consider online dating. While online dating does have a bit of a stigma attached to it, I’ve seen plenty of examples of successful online dating within my social group and my family. So go for it! Just stay safe and use your common sense.
