Female Porn Stars Are Happier Than Their Non-Porn Counterparts

By Tatyana Dyachenko

Men have long suspected this. In fact, they have dreamed of the day when they can tell their female partners - “honey, you should definitely let me film you, it’s good for your health and happiness”. A new study published this week helps support that claim as it is revealed that female porn stars have higher self-esteem, great levels of happiness, and a better overall quality of life than their non-porn counterparts.

The report was published in the Journal of Sex Research, and was summarised in the Daily Mail: 'In terms of psychological characteristics, porn actresses had higher levels of self-esteem, positive feelings, social support, sexual satisfaction and spirituality compared to the matched group.’

These findings come as a surprise considering the mainstream attitudes and assumptions made about porn actresses and their backgrounds. The strong assumptions that those women who enter into pornography come from broken homes, troubled childhoods, and backgrounds of incredibly low self-esteem have been shattered. Female porn stars can no longer be considered “broken goods”.

Dr Brooke Magnanti, the blogger behind “The Diary of a London Call Girl”, recently wrote an article about the findings on the survey. Happy pornstars can no longer be considered the exception, she argued, and happiness isn’t directly linked to the porn industry either. “Feeling good about yourself is not the result of earning power or career success. It's not a result of feeling morally superior to other women. It's not a result of bumper pay packets or looking great or even what other people think of you. None of that makes you happy,” she wrote. “Happiness is an inner spring. It's more a reflection of who you are than what you are.”

'Stereotypes of those involved in adult entertainment have been used to support or condemn the industry and to justify political views on pornography, although the actual characteristics of actresses are unknown because no study on this group of women has been conducted,' the survey reported.

With the “broken goods” theory out of the window, campaigners and haters are now forced to find other reasons to attack the porn industry. They can no longer question the morality of pornography based on the accusation and assumption that porn actresses are miserable, unhappy and lacking in confidence. Aside from proving that female adult actresses were generally happier, the report also found that the 177 surveyed adult actresses were more fulfilled, had a greater sense of spirituality, and enjoyed a better quality of life overall.
