First date knickers: granny pants VS frilly lace

By Ksenia Sobchak

Bridget Jones made us girls giggle uncontrollably as Hugh Grant elegantly peeled away her black mini skirt to reveal her slim-shaping ‘granny pants’ but the truth of the matter is – that is definitely what you’re going to wear on a first date for a firm figure-hugging, hot-damn date night dress.

Or is it?

If you’re planning a first date and you’re frantically pacing your bedroom with knickers in-hand, don’t worry: we’ve all been there. What do you wear on the first date? What’s the benefit of wearing slim-shaping granny pants and do I really want to risk exposing my fraud tummy flatness if we end up in bed?

The Granny Pants

It’s true: slim-shaping granny pants are amazing. We all have them in assorted colours. They flatten your tummy, firm up your thighs and pull in all those unseemly bulges. Ideal for a first date when you want to look impeccable.

Or, are they?

Statistics show that 1 in 6 British woman are likely to have sex on the first date. That means that there’s a 1 in 6 chance that he’ll be super hunky, amazingly charming and you won’t be able to say no when he invites you up to his place after dinner. That’s a 1 in 6 chance that he’ll see your giant knickers and go running back out through the door.

In addition, slim-shaping granny pants are not called slim-shaping for nothing: they pull, tug and hug your curves to corset you into the ideal shape. It may be super sexy, but it can wreak havoc on your digestive system if you’re eating out at a fancy restaurant. Abdominal cramps on the first date? Not great.

The frilly knickers

Frilly knickers are reserved for special occasions. They don’t hold everything in like granny pants do, but they’re pretty, feminine and let’s face it: they make you feel sexy. They’re definitely what you want him to see when he peels away your dress, but do you risk showing off your bulges for a 5 in 6 chance that you’ll go home alone tonight?

The fact is: we love frilly knickers because they make us feel great. They’re pretty, lacy and we know they’re there. Wearing your best lingerie on a first date is a great way to boost your confidence, let you know that you can have what you want, and that you look good too. At the end of the date it doesn’t really matter if he doesn’t see them: it’s all about you and giving you the confidence boost you need to enjoy close encounters of a deliciously tempting kind.

So what’s the verdict?

Whether you’re a no-sex-on-the-first-date kinda girl or an up-for-anything-babe, frilly knickers make an excellent confidence booster and mood-setter. Granny pants definitely give you the flat-tummy edge but they’re best saved for business meetings and interviews when chances are, they’ll stay right where they are for the duration of the encounter.
