Fisting For Beginners

By Elena Ognivtseva

Anal fisting first came to prominence in the late 1960s as a practice employed on the gay scene, especially in clubs associated with BDSM. As anal sex for women has become more openly accepted (up to a point) over the last years, fisting for women has also begun to be discussed in the more experimental reaches of sexual society. Vaginal fisting is also possible, but here we will be looking at anal fisting.

What is fisting?

Fisting is the practice of inserting a whole hand, or as much of it as is possible, into the rectum of a partner. The name would seem to indicate that the practice involves stuffing a hand balled into a fist into someone’s anus but this would be painful and dangerous. Fisting properly should be a carefully-approached, exciting and even spiritual experience.

Poppers

Poppers (alkyl nitrites) have been traditional associated with fisting as they relax the anal sphincters. It is illegal to sell poppers for human consumption, but they are sold as ‘video head cleaners’. Poppers can be dangerous, especially taken in combination with other drugs such as Viagra, (this can be fatal.) The fumes of the liquid are sniffed, which results in a dizzy, thumping sensation in the head. It is not advisable to be intoxicated in any way when experimenting with fisting, as partner communication and control of faculties is vital.

How do I begin?

Fisting should only be attempted in a safe environment with fisters who can be relied upon to follow detailed instructions from a fistee. The fister should wear a medical glove that goes past the wrist, which if it tears at any stage should be replaced. Nails should be filed short or covered. Water based lube of a thick consistency is preferable - liberal amounts of this should be used. The fistee will need to have a bowel movement and an enema around two hours before the fisting begins. This will ensure that the bowel is empty and give the rectum time to regenerate its protective mucous.

Preparing the anus

You will need to spend a considerable amount of time relaxing the anus of the fistee before you begin. It may be that it is a good idea to start with anal massage and then a small butt plug, working up to larger-sized plugs. As this happens, the fistee might find that an orgasm through oral sex or masturbation relaxes them and turns them on, preparing them for further action. Though the usual lube rule is ON, NOT IN, in this case it is a good idea to introduce some lube into the anus (as well as on to any toys, fingers or hands that are in play.) This can be done with a syringe.

Positions

The position the fistee adopts during fisting will determine the position of the fisters hand also. The process can take up to several hours so everyone will need to be in a comfortable and sustainable position. Options include:
Missionary with knees up, fistee on their back with legs bent towards the chest – this will allow the fister to access the fistee’s anus easily. The fister’s hand will be palm up with fingers overlapped to create a point. The tips of the fingers can massage the G-Spot or prostate.

Missionary on the edge – it can help with access if the fistee’s buttocks are resting at the edge of the bed. Sex swings can also be very helpful in this scenario. The hand position will be the same as above.

Doggy – flip the hand so the palm faces down if entering from behind, this will allow you to stimulate the G-spot/prostate. A straight, on-all-fours doggy may be preferable, or the fistee can bend over furniture if they would like.

Getting in

Slide your hand in extremely slowly, building up the number of fingers until the whole hand can be accepted. It may be that you do not feel that you can get this far and it should never be pushed - go with what your bodies are suited to. The fistee should lead all the action, giving constant instructions and feedback to the fister. If you can go past the widest part of your hand, sit still and wait for a moment as you both adjust to the new sensations of the hand being fully inside the fistee’s body. It may be that such an unusual experience brings up strong emotions in either or both of you. When you have adjusted a little, communicate about how to proceed. The fistee may like the fister to keep their hand still or to move it: be careful as small movements can feel very exaggerated. The fistee may want genital stimulation and orgasm or it may be that the body is too overwhelmed for that. If the fistee does orgasm the fister should be prepared for a strong sensation at the wrist. Lube can be added all the way through the process.

Afterwards

Obviously withdraw your hand very carefully and slowly, which can still be a little uncomfortable for the fistee as the largest part of the hand is withdrawn. The fistee may experience some soreness or cramping and should not have further enemas – just let the body recover. Fisting should never be painful; if it is – stop. Fisting should be a journey of trust, intimacy and adventure that can tap into deep emotions for all involved – if you are participating, it should be with care, respect and a total focus on constant communication.
