How to choose the right vibrator

By Elena Ognivtseva

Ready for a little bit of pleasant experimentation? If you’ve never used a vibrator before, or if you have only limited use to a single model, then it’s time to get creative. You may just like it! Each vibrator model has its own feel and its own special character, and we say, even its own personality. And because they don’t get jealous, you’re free to keep as many as you like!

What will you do with it?

It may seem like an obvious question, but a vibrator can have many uses. While most are used to stimulate the clitoris externally, some are used for penetration in the vagina, while others may be preferred for insertion into the anus. Can you use the same one for all purposes? Usually not. The more creatively-designed and stylistic vibrators are usually designed for external stimulation, and just aren’t meant to go inside. They may be egg-shaped, or may even have a variety of attachments. If you’re after a deeper, vaginal “buzz”, then go for the ones that are shaped appropriately. That is, the old-fashioned cock-shaped ones, or one that’s long with a curve towards the tip (great for G-spot stimulation!). Or, you might enjoy the “rabbit” style vibrators, which can be intensely pleasurable and have rocketed in popularity in recent years. A Rabbit Vibrator is a shaft-style vibrator, which has another attachment that pleasures the clitoris, so both the vagina and clitoris can be stimulated at the same time, giving you the best of both worlds. If you’re after anal play with a vibrator, you’ll need one specially designed for that purpose, which will be narrower, and usually contain a flared base.

Vibrations

It is called a “vibrator”, after all, so how it vibrates is going to be a major factor in your buying decision. Only you will be able to decide what the right amount of vibration is, and many people will find that it really depends on the mood. Vibrators with variable speed controls are best, because they give you the ability to experiment, and switch back and forth depending on what you need at the time. A lot of vibrators also have an array of functions, not only standard vibrating modes. These may include pulsating, escalating or rollercoaster settings, but these vibes are often a bit pricier. If you want a vibe that has multiple functions and multiple speeds, dropping a few extra dollars for that flexibility may just be great investment.

A little privacy, please . . .

There are two things that people are concerned about when buying a vibrator (outside of picking one that will feel good to use), and that is the sound, and how it looks. If you live in an apartment with thin walls, and your vibrator sounds like a lawnmower that needs a tune-up, you may get a few raised eyebrows in the lobby. Now depending on your inclination, the raised eyebrows may lead to some interesting situations later on, so if you don’t mind the neighbours knowing what you’re up to, then go for the noisy one. But, if the thin walls (or roommates) are a potential problem, you’ll want to get some information on the vibrator’s sound level. Some are quieter than others, so if you have a houseful of inquisitive roommates, go for the more subtle, quiet version. The appearance too, can cause potential embarrassment. Now we feel that if you want a vibrator that’s shaped like a big hard cock, then you should have one, and you should feel good about having it. But, some people may feel embarrassed, especially if they’re travelling, and there’s a chance the hotel maid, roommate, or airport inspector may see it. In that case, protecting your privacy is an important issue, and you can address that issue by purchasing a vibrator with a more subtle design. There are wonderful vibrators that, to the casual observer, appears to be nothing more than a cosmetic case.

Power supply

A battery-powered vibrator is convenient for travel, and the smaller ones that take a single AA battery are very discrete and easy to carry. However, these aren’t going to have nearly the same “oomph” as others that require four batteries, are rechargeable or even plug into a wall outlet.

When all is said and done, it is definitely up to you and what you think will best suit your situation and needs!
