How to Clean Your Vibrators

By Tatyana Dyachenko

Cleaning your vibrator is one of the most important things that you should do when it comes to looking after your vibrating toys. You should do this prior to first use, and then every time after you've finished playing with your adult toy.

Taking a few minutes to clean your vibrator should ensure that you eradicate any hidden germs and bacteria preventing them from being passed onto you. The last thing you want from your vibrators are painful inflammations to your erogenous zones.

Before cleaning your vibrator you need to distinguish what material it's made from because using the incorrect cleaning products could result in damage to the surface of your vibrator making it unsafe to use. Cleaning your vibrator properly could also result in the lifespan of your toy being extended. Don't ever put off cleaning your vibrator until the following day. Using hypoallergenic and un-perfumed antibacterial soaps and sex toy cleaners can avoid irritation from occurring in the genitals the next time you use your vibrator. So how do you clean the following vibrating toys?

Waterproof vs Non-Waterproof Vibrators

If your vibrator is fully waterproof then it can be cleaned without having to remove the batteries. However, if your vibrator is only splashproof or not waterproof then you should always take the batteries out prior to cleaning. Take special care and attention when cleaning around the battery compartment - do not get this area wet or damp. If any moisture should get into the battery compartment, ensure that it's thoroughly wiped dry before putting your vibe away. Never submerse non-waterproof vibrators in water otherwise this will damage the motor permanently.

Plastic Vibrators

If your vibrator is made from either hard or smooth coated plastic clean it using a soft cloth with either antibacterial soap and warm water, or alternatively, replace the antibacterial soap with an anti-bacterial sex toy cleaner. Wipe/pat dry with a soft cloth or a clean tissue. If you're using an antibacterial soap, it's important to ensure that all soap residues have been removed before your toy is packed away. If you use an ordinary perfumed soap for cleaning your vibrator with ensure that all traces of it have been removed because candida (vaginal thrush) is commonly caused by this. Alcohol can also be used to sterilise the outside of your plastic toys.

Jelly Rubber/Latex Vibrators

More porous materials such as jelly rubber or latex can be more susceptible to harbouring potentially harmful germs and bacteria than non-porous materials such as hard plastics because they're more absorbent. Use either antibacterial soap and warm water or sex toy cleaner and warm water before drying your vibrator off with a soft, dry cloth. If your vibrator is made from latex, you should choose an alcohol free anti-bacterial sex toy cleaner as alcohol can rot latex over time.

Cyberskin/Real Feel Vibrators

Any vibrators that are made from CyberSkin, Real Feel Skin Loveclone, UR3 or PleasureSkin are designed to feel just like the real thing. These vibrators, unlike vibrators with smooth flat surfaces, come with lots of hiding places for germs and bacteria because of all their lumps and bumps. Use warm water and anti-bacterial toy cleaner on the surface of the vibrator and dry it off with an anti-static cloth so that no lint is left on the toy. To prevent these vibrators from becoming tacky after cleaning, apply a thin layer of cornflour to the vibrator's surface which will make it feel brand new every time you use it.

Silicone Vibrators

Wipe non-porous silicone vibrators clean with warm water and anti-bacterial soap or apply an even spray of sex toy cleaner onto their surfaces.
