It used to be that long distance relationships were due to a holiday fling, relocations due to work or even through good old fashioned pen pals. Now though long distance relationships are on the increase, due to the dating sites that allow you to find your match anywhere some people even have oceans between them.
It's a well-known fact that a long distance relationship has less chance of surviving than any other, yet people are making it work, using the one thing that brought them together, the internet.
Here are some tips on how to make your long distance relationship work.
Just because you're far away it doesn't mean that you can't date - each other. Some think that because of the distance, contact is fleeting until you meet again, however, if you really want to be together, you'll really want to spend an evening on Skype, sharing drinks, chatting or simply laughing when you can't meet up for a real date.
Skype is so advanced now that you can see every movement and with a good web cam you don't have to just sit at a desk. Your laptop can be your company for a wonderful night in and who knows where it may lead.
It may not be a good idea to have your first sexual encounter with each other over the internet (although some do), but if you've already met and consummated the relationship it's a good idea to keep those feelings going. By ensuring you're the one he/she thinks of the most when those sexual urges come, you're making the bond tighter between you.
You can do this with phone sex, text sex, or our favourite Skype. It'll almost feel real though not as great as the real thing when you do finally meet up.
One of the main reasons long distance relationships suffer is due to drifting apart, which is actually avoidable. Couples feel as though as time progresses they have little in common but there is a way to make sure you stay involved.
Make sure you talk about daily life, such as new work colleagues, new friends, small events, as it's when one of you start discussing parts of your life that the other isn't familiar with that cracks begin to show.
Although when you do meet up you probably want to make the most of it and spend the entire time alone, it is a good idea to arrange a date with friends too. This will make your partner, or you feel completely connected, and will also ensure that the people he/she spends a lot of time with when you're not there can talk about you with confidence.
