Is Modern Technology Ruining Your Sex Life

By Tatyana Dyachenko

A recent study has found that the unprecedented rise in the amount of online social networking which the average Brit does in a day, coupled with the growth in the handheld device market is having a contributing factor to a lowering in the amount sex we are having.

A shift in our bedtime habits has meant that we Brits are now going to sleep at around midnight, mostly due to us bringing our laptops or handheld devices to bed to watch a movie, chat on Facebook or generally surf the net. Ten years ago the average bedtime of an adult in Britain was 10:30pm, which left far more time for cuddles and sex before sleep took hold. All of these late nights and early mornings are playing havoc with our bodies during the week, leaving us too tired for sex.

So, what should we do to combat this epidemic? In my home laptops are banned from the bedroom except for in two specific circumstances. The first if when one of us wants to watch a movie, but is too ill to sit on our very uncomfortable couch, and I’m sure this is true of many households. The second is when we fancy watching a naughty movie or online porn. In this circumstance the laptop is a god send as it means you can curl up in bed with your partner while you watch the movie and their body is right there for you to explore. It also means that once the naughty movie is finished (that’s if you get to the end!) you can simply pop the laptop under the bed and get busy!

I’m also very much against labelling all modern technology as ‘bad for your sex life’ as many examples of modern technology can do your sex life a world of good! I’m thinking of the wonderful rabbit vibrator, the much-loved sleeve masturbator and remote control love egg! Without the wonderful technology which is abound these days, such toys would not be possible.

I think the key here is to impose some boundaries which both partners are happy with. If you hate it when your other half brings the laptop to bed, then tell them. The promise of more sex is enough to convince anyone to leave the electronics in the livings room, and to keep the bedroom for sleeping and sex, not surfing and Skyping!
