Phone Sex: A Pseudo-Physical Connection In A Digital World

By Tatyana Dyachenko

With a mobile in every pocket and a PC in every household, it’s undeniable that we live in a digital age, with people across the ocean reachable at the touch of a few buttons. Unsurprisingly, in what might be considered the evolution of the lengthy love letter, phone sex and “sexting” have flourished as a result.

If you haven’t guessed by now, phone sex involves a lot of moaning into the receiver, as those on the line simulate sex by means of breathy and imaginative storytelling. There’s also the fact that both parties are (ideally) getting off on it, making phone sex comparable to mutual masturbation, only over a distance. With the brain being the primary sex organ, a shared fantasy can be incredibly arousing; the absence of physical contact is hardly missed, or – indeed – heightens the arousal.

Hearing one’s lover in their throes of ecstasy certainly has its own appeal, making some of the benefits of this practice immediately obvious. Lovers who are temporarily out of physical touch may maintain the passion between them, and would-be lovers, separated by circumstance (in many cases never having actually met in person) can find an outlet for their sexual frustrations in phone sex. Furthermore, the easiness of phone sex and (in many cases) its furtive nature, can work to make it uniquely exciting; an illicit thrill which both callers can enjoy.

The downside to all this is equally apparent: with nothing but voices to work with, phone sex can only take one so far. Being the affectionate creatures we are, eventually the desire for physical contact can leave this practice feeling hollow and unfulfilling. There’s also no guarantee that the person on the other end is enjoying themselves as much as you are. Phone sex hotlines, aimed at the lonely and desperate, hook the caller up to an anonymous, imaginary squeeze for the sake of sexual satisfaction, but you can be sure there’s no love there.

Ultimately, as exciting, tempting and even useful as phone sex may be, it’s at best a supplement for a healthy, physical sex life. In fact, it’s a great addition to a healthy relationship if you’re looking to add a bit of spice to your everyday interactions or you want to try something new with your partner.
