This article is about sexual exploits in literature, not saying what people have done, but its place in fiction. Stories solely about sex, or those with it contained within its pages, whatever the case it has had its place in our books for many years.
So, sexy literature. First lets start with books containing it. Now, when I was a teenager I always loved a book with a bit of sex in it, I had a very good imagination and my hormones had replaced my blood. That isn’t to say it is only for teenagers though. If you read a bit of sex in a book it generally makes you happier, you get a portion of that warm fuzzy feeling the characters have, almost as if you are sharing their pleasure. That is the point of it. It is a break from the normal drama to something you know you can understand and something you know you will like to read.
What about books that are dedicated to it however? Well they say a picture is a thousand words, so think of a porn picture and turn it into a paragraph. Although it is basically that, porn in text, if only it were that simple. It takes a degree of skill and experience to write erotic literature and make it believable instead of just crude. It is generally stated that most writers won’t ‘stoop’ to erotic literature, my general feeling of this is that they can’t. It is something that has to be done perfectly, one slip-up and you lose the mood. In a novel you can have a few minor ones but keep the storyline basically intact, you can’t in this. I would know. I have tried to write it myself in the past and it is hard to get it right. It took many many attempts before I managed something half believable.
So how do people view sexy literature? Well it has been proven that most women will far prefer to read an erotic book and use their imagination than to watch porn. As for men, the general view is why do all the thinking work if it has been done for you. Personally I do not follow this view, while my views on porn are clear through other articles, I do like the odd erotic writings now and again. I always feel it is sad that they are shunned to such a degree that, although the people who write them are better than some acclaimed writers, they get no credit for it. It is about time it started appearing on the shelves, taking some of the space dedicated to ‘men’s magazines.’ It will still be top shelf and maybe someone will actually buy it, instead of just flicking through the pages, looking at the pretty pictures, and putting it back.
Anyway, I am sure my view is clear on this, I think sexy literature is a good thing that should be embraced, it allows our imagination a little work out which can always help in the bedroom. I am sure you have your own views and opinions on this so tell us about them.
