Apple wowed the world last year with their release of Siri: an intelligent software that interacts with voice commands through the latest iPhone handsets. Siri can set reminders for you, it can action events or instructions through simple dialogue, and it can help you find your way around a city.
However, Siri users have also discovered that it has another use: it can help you find a partner if you’re willing to pay. Looking for a late-night lover? No problem. Want an escort for the day? Not going to be an issue – in fact, there may be several near to your location and Siri will help you find them all. That is, of course, unless you are in China.
Prostitution and solicitation are illegal in China, and Siri has been making officials uncomfortable with its eager-to-please attitude. In fact, after a recent uproar in China, Chinese officials have banned Siri’s intelligent responses when it comes to breaking the law, China Daily reported.
Previously, Siri users in China were able to locate hookers at nearby clubs or bars, and were directed based on the phone’s geographical location. Now, the software simply reports “I couldn’t find any escort services”. This is in line with the software’s standpoint on other legal issues in China. For example, asking your iPhone where you might buy a firearm in China (which is illegal) would result in a simple “I don’t know what that means” before Siri redirects you to Google. America, on the other hand, has plenty of Siri-detailed information about where to find the nearest gun shop and prostitutes, but lacks any data about abortion clinics – even in New York City.
However, back in China, despite the apparent pornographic nature of the Siri information service and the obvious legal implications for users engaging in escort services after following Siri’s directions, authorities were unable to verify whether the sources were legitimate. A police officer told China Daily “We have not received any complaints or reports regarding Siri's providing pornographic information so far.”
Could it all be down to a simple translation problem? Does Siri really help you find a late-night hook-up or is it all a case of linguistics? A Huffington Post reporter asked her iPhone for help finding a prostitute, and was pleased to hear that “[her phone] found 10 escorts. Eight of them are fairly close to you.”
