The Internet Just Got Sexier With .sex Domains

By Tatyana Dyachenko

Gone are the days with .com and .co.uk internet domains: this week ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) released a list of applied-for domain extensions that are going to rock the web with .porn, .sex and .sexy.

Earlier this year major domain registration houses announced that they will be releases .xxx domains which give the viewer a good idea of what’s going to be on the site before they even type in the URL. The idea was that it was good branding for adult-themed websites, and very good for consumers who can block certain types of domains if they want, or make an informed decision about the sites they want to visit.

Now, with ICANN’s recent announcement that the list of 22 standard domains (generic Top-Level Domains, or gTLDs) is about to expand as over 1,930 applications were made over the last three months from more than 60 different countries. Applications cost around £118,800.

The full list of applications has been published by ICANN who are coordinating the expansion. The new change means that the internet is about to get a whole lot sexier and far more useful with clever categorisation as domains can now end in ‘.shop’ instead of only ‘.com’ or even ‘.org’.

Other gTLDs applied for include ‘.bbc’ by the British Broadcasting Commission and ‘.beauty’ by major cosmetic company L’Oreal. There’s also ‘.love’ for those potentially looking for online dating, ‘.play’ for those interested in fun, and ‘.pics’ for – well, you guessed it – online photos and videos. This new internet movement gives online companies an entirely new aspect to consider when creating a full branded company portfolio with a dedicated online presence.
