Dear Martina
I've recently become involved with a friend. We've been good friends for seven years but then we kissed and realised there was a massive spark between us. He's told me his marriage is over and all ties are just financial - he says we'll be together properly next year. I hear all the time that men keep mistresses by leading them on like this; will he ever leave his wife?
I know what Cosmo would say. Right now readers will be shouting, "NO he'll never leave his wife" but I disagree. There are men that are habitual cheats, which adore having bits on the side as it feeds their ego. They also claim to love their wives and never even consider leaving them. These men will either bolt at the suggestion of this, or they'll avoid the subject giving only short answers. They will probably have a list of excuses that will change to suit a situation. 'My wife's ill", 'My daughter's going through a bad patch", 'I can't handle the stress right now" etc.
Although we don't like to dwell on it there are unhappy marriages out there. Many husbands and wives are in relationships simply because they're scared of being on their own. Some even forget what a happy life is until they meet a person that reminds them what they're missing.
So if he is taking the time to talk through his plans and you believe him, leave the subject alone and enjoy. Of course if he hasn't lived up to his promises by the date he says, come back and we'll think of a way to force his hand!
