Beginners Guide to Dildos

By Ksenia Sobchak

If you want to try sex toys but don't want to jump straight in with vibrators then dildos are ideal for providing hours of penetrating pleasures. With so much choice available, how do you know which type of dildo is going to be the best one to suit your needs?

This straightforward, easy to follow guide should help to make your choice a little easier.

Anal Dildos

Located within the anal sex toys and jelly dildos sections, anal dildos can be used by men and women alike. They are usually slightly curved and narrower than standard dildos allowing for far easier anal entry which is especially good for targeting the male g-spot otherwise known as the prostate gland or p spot. Often made from soft jelly rubber, anal dildos come with a flared base to prevent them from going in too far.

Recommended: Jolly Buttock Dildo, priced at £14.97.

Good for: Anal penetration (the suction cup base also allows for hands free action).

Double Dildos

As the name suggests, these dildos come with two ends. Also known as double ended dildos, these dongs are usually associated with lesbian play but can be used for solo stimulation, and by heterosexual couples. This all depends on the flexibility of the double dildo. If it's required for vaginal to anal play, you must also take into consideration the width of the ends. It might be better to begin with a double dildo that comes with one end which is narrower therefore making anal penetration an easier proposition. Double dildos are available in a number of different sizes and materials.

Recommended: The Double, priced at £15.97.

Good for: Play with a partner, solo pleasures and vaginal/anal penetration.

Glass Dildos

Located in our sex toys section, glass dildos are one of the most durable sex toys that you can purchase. Hand made by craftsmen, glass dildos are designed to withstand a lifetime of wear and tear and can either be heated up in the microwave or under hot running water, or cooled in the freezer or under cold running water ensuring they offer up a range of sensations that you wouldn't get from most other dildos. They will not shatter and can withstand up to 3000lb worth of pressure making them incredibly safe to use. Very easy to keep clean due to their non-porous qualities, glass dildos can even be cleaned in the dishwasher!

Recommended: Fifty Shades of Grey Drive Me Crazy Glass Massage Wand, priced at £27.97.

Good for: Vaginal penetration.

Harness Compatible Dildos

Housed in the silicone dildos section, harness compatible dildos all come with a flared base that will keep them in securely in place when coupled with a harness of your choice and the appropriate o-ring. Although they are perfect for strap on action, these dildos can also be used independently of the harness for solo thrusting whenever you wish.

Recommended: Tantus Charmer, priced at £29.97.

Good for: Vaginal penetration and g-spot stimulation. It can also be used in conjunction with a harness as a strap on dildo.

Jelly Dildos

Ideal for sex toy beginners, jelly dildos are made from soft jelly rubber which can make them easier to insert than other dildos made from harder materials such as glass and hard plastics. Often very flexible (but at the same time firm enough to please), jelly dildos can be manipulated into a number of different positions making adventures from all sorts of different angles possible! Some jelly dildos can also be used for anal penetration. Jelly dildos are also one of the cheapest forms of dildo available.

Recommended: Pink Jelly Teaser, priced at £11.95.

Good for: Anal or vaginal penetration.

Realistic Dildos

If you want your dildo to look as true to life as possible then try a realistic dildo. Made from a variety of materials including PVC, silicone and jelly, realistic dildos come with all the bumps, protrusions, veins and lumps that you would expect to see on an erect penis. Plus, some examples also come with the addition of lifelike ball sacs and/or a suction cup base for hands free fun.

Recommended: Rebel Small Dong, priced at £22.47.

Good for: Anal or vaginal penetration.

Squirting Dildos

If you want your dildo experience to be as close to real sex as possible then squirting dildos are just what you need. Looking like a real-life erect penis, a squirting dildo can be filled with water or another liquid of your choosing, and then be squirted into the vagina and/or anus at the appropriate moment. These dildos can also be refilled so that you can enjoy them time and time again.

Recommended: Cum Shot Squirting Dildo, priced at £18.97.

Good for: Vaginal or anal penetration.

Strap On Dildos

Strap ons usually consist of a dildo that is attached to a harness for penetration. They are commonly used by lesbian couples but slimline strap ons can also be used by heterosexual couples for when she wants to give him anal sex. Another popular type of strap ons are hollow strap ons which are worn by men who suffer from erectile dysfunction. Harnesses, harness compatible dildos and vibrating strap ons as well as strapless strap ons (where an anal or vaginal plug keeps it firmly in place) can also be purchased.

Recommended: Slim Jim Strap On, priced at £19.99.

Good for: Anal or vaginal penetration, with or without vibrations.

Suction Cup Dildos

Perfectly suited to hands free fun, suction cup dildos can be attached to virtually any smooth, flat surface including walls, floors, tables and chairs thanks to their strong suction cup bases. Mainly penis shaped in design, these dildos allow your hands to roam free during penetration so that anything is possible, and sex from all kinds of different angles can be attempted.

Recommended: Hammer Drill, priced at £12.99.

Good for: Vaginal or anal penetration.

Once you're more experienced, you might want to try out big dildos which are available up to 16 inches in length and 2.75 inches in diameter.
