How to choose the right dildo for you

By Ksenia Sobchak

A dildo is so much more than a simple tool for pleasure, and there are so many different creative ways that they can be made. Choosing one is a very personal decision, and the right one can be an incredible enhancement to your pleasure, whether you are alone or with a partner. Selecting one with a special partner can be exciting though, so don’t be shy about selecting one together with that special someone!

Dildos come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colours and textures. While some are more creative in design, others are created to look and feel exactly like a penis. What works best, a realistic one, or one with a more creative design? The answer depends on your mood, and you can maximize your pleasure by keeping a varied collection to suit your every whim.

Shapes and sizes

A traditional, penis-shaped dildo is usually solid and has no electronics – but it can often look remarkably realistic, and feel just like the real thing. The only difference is that your traditional dildo will last as long as you want, and is always ready for action! Look for a realistic dildo that includes a suction base, which makes it easy to position when you’re ready for some solo action. The traditional style can be very stimulating visually, especially when it is made with the same colour and texture as a real cock – right down to the bumps and ridges.

But remember, a dildo doesn’t have to look like a penis to work, and some of the more creative improvements that have been designed can be better than the real thing. One of the more interesting varieties is the double-ended dildo, which is perfect for sharing between two partners! Another variety of the double-ended dildo is c-shaped for double personal penetration in both the vagina and anus.

Choosing the right size is vital, and remember ladies, bigger is not always better. The massive porn star models may sound like a good idea at first, but if you’re petite, it may prove to be just a little too much. But if you’re a plus-sized woman, the daintier models just won’t be able to ring your bell – go for something more size-appropriate.

Size will also depend on what you intend to do with it. An anal dildo meant to stimulate a man’s prostate will usually be smaller, especially for beginners. For anal play, look for a narrow model with a broad base – you don’t want it to get lost!

What’s it made of?

The “building material” is of utmost importance, as this will impact the look and feel of your new dildo. Smooth, seamless dildos are often made from rubber, silicone, or a type of jellied material. One hundred percent silicone dildos tend to be the best quality, although they may be somewhat more expensive. However, it’s worth a few extra dollars for a more realistic feel and greater durability.

Lubrication

You may also wish to use a lubricant with your dildo, particularly if you’re interested in anal play, to protect the soft tissue inside your body. Silicone-based lubricants may work well for certain types of dildos, but never use a silicone-based lubricant on a silicone dildo. This is due to the fact that it may cause permanent damage to the texture and quality. Instead, use a water-based lubricant.

A personal selection

When all’s said and done, your selection is a personal one, and there is no one, perfect decision. Your decision will ultimately be guided by what you and your partner like, what looks best to you, and what feels good. Enjoy!
