Betony Vernon was born in Tazewell, Virginia. She is the daughter of an art historian mother and a pilot father. She was the third of her parents' four children, all girls. She was married to Barnaba Forsnasetti from 2004 to 2014.

Betony Vernon’s Journey to Success

In 1990, Betony Vernon graduated with an Art History degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a religious studies and goldsmithing minor. Smurthwaite (2013) discovered that Betony Vernon created her first erotic jewelry in 1992, but the society was conservative and reluctant to adorn erotic jewelry, so she chose to sell her jewelry privately. Chiaro 2018 revealed that Vernon designed a jewelry box known as the Boudoir box and sold it directly to the public in 2017. Vernon says that she made the Boudoir box for herself, but she got so much attention when she walked out with it, and some customers started making orders. She also sells bespoke fittings. Bespoke fittings are customized garments. The garments are made from scratch according to the client’s specifications. However, Betony Vernon also refers to herself as an industrial designer. An industrial designer makes the designs an item that will be reproduced in the same design for mass production.

Bertone Vernon says in her interviews that she has been fascinated by erotic jewelry since she was 17. She had no idea where her erotic jewelry would take her, but she tried anyway. Vernon did not make as many sales as hoped with her erotic jewelry and therefore felt the need to be a sex educator to educate prospective clients. She continued designing jewelry for private clients. Her main interest was to make jewelry to meet her needs, but when Vernon realized that plastic jewelry was not comfortable. She liked silver because it is easy to clean, non-porous, and naturally anti-bacterial. She prefers silver toys because the plastic toys resemble children’s toys, in her opinion. She felt that the materials and the colors used for the children's toys were a distraction for an activity meant for adults only.

Vernon had been told expressly by a fashion hostess that the jewelry designs that she had created were inappropriate. Vernon became lax and she would approach her with her jewelry from her negative experience in the fashion world. Vernon decided to get to the problem, so she became a sex educator. She realized that she would have to educate her clients if she ever achieved any success in designing erotic jewelry.
