What is a dildo?

By Ksenia Sobchak

There is much debate about exactly what a dildo is. Simply put, a dildo can be categorized as almost anything that is stuck inside of the body for masturbation of sexual intercourse, but since your partner might give you an awkward look if you pulled out a Banana and said, “Look at my new dildo!” I’ll provide you with a dictionary-like definition.

Dildo: pronounced dil – doe, is:

An object (often referred to as a sex toy) that has a size, shape and overall appearance of an erect penis
An object used as a substitute for an erect penis
A sex toy, often representing a penis and intended for bodily interaction during masturbation
Now that you have the basic definition of a dildo down packed let’s get into the nitty gritty.

Most people generally define a dildo as a non-vibrating sex toy that fits in the aforementioned category. The pulsating toys are left to a category of their own, banally known as . . . . surprise . . . Vibrators!

For a dildo, it’s just a plain old penis shaped instrument that you use to get yourself off with. Some people also include butt plugs, devices used for anal penetration, as dildos.

Dildlos come in a variety of shapes, sizes, textures and materials for your comfort and to accommodate the girth that you need. For the more adventurous individuals, there are even dildos in the shape of animal genitalia.

Dildos can be used for fun alone, with a partner or in groups, for men and women. Use of dildos can be healthy and psychologically beneficial to your life.

They have been around for much longer than you think, proving that the ancients sure did know something back then. Archaeologists in many places have discovered Stone dildos. Remnants of these old and ornate sex toys have been found in the royal quarters of ancient kings and queens. Playing with a dildo was a treat that was eventually passed down to the commoners. The ancient Greeks called them olisbos, and believed using them would relieve hysteria. The word dildo itself probably comes from similar words in Italian and Greek. Now, ages later the key is in your hands. You can grab a dildo, discover yourself and while at it, become a part of sexual history.

Why use a dildo?

For those of you who are still unsure about dildos or on the fence, you’re probably asking yourself “why the heck should I use a dildo?” The common misconceptions about dildos might be floating through your mind, you might simply be thinking, “what do they do that I can’t do myself?” or maybe you’re wondering “what’s so special if they don’t vibrate or do any other tricks?”

Well dildos are a simple pleasure. The are made to emulate an erect penis (which some believe is a symbol of power), and don’t do all that gyrating because they are made for you to control the thrusting action that gets you off.

Dildos have been in existence since the third century, and paintings and sculptures suggest that men and women enjoyed the erotic play afforded them by these penis shaped objects. Ancient civilizations have given us many things that are the foundations of cultures today, so why not trust that they stumbled upon something good when they discovered and started using dildos.

If that’s not enough for convincing, maybe the following will help you see the light!

Mood Enhancer

Dildos allow you to let your inner sexual being reign free. When you are expressing yourself sexually, you are also improving your self-esteem, which overall makes you a happy person.

Stimulation of the Senses

You and your partner can’t help getting off seeing a dildo slip in and out of you as you squirm and squeal in delight. The visual stimulation of someone getting off right in front of your eyes is something fantastic. For men it’s even better, because they get a close up and personal view of just what you look like when they’re inside of you thrusting away.

Exploration

Using a dildo alone can help you explore sexual places within yourself. Experiment with different forms, depths and sizes of penetration. This solo play can be a test drive for a lusty new move that you want to try without the anxiety and possible embarrassment of having your lover present and ready.

Place Holder

Sometime in a relationship one partner climaxes before the other or may want intercourse more. A dildo can be used in situations where the man has climaxed and his partner is ready for more. He can manually stimulate her with a dildo while he re-ups for the next round. When one partner wants more sex, choosing to stimulate that partner with a dildo can be the best way to keep him or her satisfied and not lead to an unfulfilling sex life.

Vaginal Therapy

For women, using a dildo can help strengthen the Kegel muscles and increase better orgasms.

For men who have recently underwent a sex change, dildos are often used and even prescribed to increase elasticity of the new vagina.

An Oral Extra

While giving or receiving oral sex the chin dildo can add an extra something to the experience. Penetration while licking down below will skyrocket your lover into ecstasy.

Safe Sex

Using a dildo is a very safe form of sex, especially if you use a non-porous dildo. Make sure you use a condom while playing with your dildo and you’ll never have to worry about infecting yourself or a partner.

Abstinence

For those that are opting out of having sexual contact, the dildo can be a great replacement for a penis actually penetrating the vagina. You can experience all of the fun of full penetration without your privates actually touching.

Always Ready

Lastly, your dildo will always say yes. It will never turn you down, say not tonight, or give any of the other excuses you’ve heard. You can use it all night long with no worries. What could be better?
