Technological advancement has led to the change in many sectors surrounding humans, including sexual practices.

Change is inevitable. Sexuality, like anything else, has had a continuous change in how people show and the way they view love. Earlier, there was love, and the only thing about love was that all people were free to love and experience a good vibe. Moreover, society was all about people living right, and monogamous relationship was the unspoken rule. This is still evident today because society views divorce as a total failure, as Kollm (2009) described.

A monogamous relationship is one where you have only one lover. They are committed exclusively to a sexual relationship with each other for life, such as marriage.

Types of Monogamy Relationships

Serial Monogamy

This is a relationship where you can have only one partner at a time. This applies to those who are not married.

Consensual Non-Monogamy

According to Moors et al. (2015), this is a relationship where the romantic partners decide to have other sexual partners but still be in a relationship. This means they consent from each other to do so.

What Is Polygamy

Sheff (2016) explained that polygamy is the state where a person marries different people. It should not be confused with an open relationship where a couple decides to have other multiple sexual partners outside of their primary relationship. This is done with the consent of each other, and there is an agreement on how the whole thing will be carried out.

It might be hard to identify a monogamous relationship today. With the change in the sexual trend, the young generation of this century and the way they carry out their sexual activities have posed a great threat to the monogamy relationship.

The studies carried out among the youths recently show a large percentage of virgins aged 18 to 30 in America, and another percentage is just waiting to get there to have sex. This is because of over-protective parenting. Those who practiced sexual constraint were happier, and those who were promiscuous showed more signs of depression, which is very dangerous to the general health and psychological wellness of any person.

The Pros of Monogamy

Decrease in the Number of Unplanned Pregnancies and Spread of Diseases

Monogamy is good since it has reduced the number of unplanned pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. This is due to the long waiting of the teens before engaging in sexual activities. With the monogamy type of relationship, it is evident that most teenagers have achieved their goals in life. This is one of the pros of monogamy in modern society.

Monogamy Provides Clear Sets of Behaviour, Societal Stability, and Rules

Society has laid its rules based on the monogamy type of relationship. According to Evans (1992), monogamy protects people from going into sexual immorality. Many outcomes are associated with immorality, such as early pregnancies and the contraction of diseases like sexually transmitted diseases. It has also helped the people in society to behave in the right manner because they do not want to be viewed as failures for doing what is prohibited by society. Everyone wants to have a sense of belonging and be appreciated by their society. Due to this desire, they are made a norm to follow the rules set so that they can be role models for the coming generation.

Biparental Child Care is Possible With Monogamous Relationships

People can carry out parenting for those with children. Society can chip in where there is a need for parenting. Moreover, the child care provided is genuine.

Monogamy Promotes Emotional Security and Social Peace

Human beings are jealous by nature. This can cause disunity and a lack of peace among the people and personalities. Emotional insecurity is also the outcome of being in these relationships. You will have peace of mind and body when you know that your spouse will come back home to you. You will not also have any problems with society that can make you feel like you are in the wrong. With a monogamous relationship, society will not criticize you but instead use you as an example for others to follow, which is healthy for the relationship you have in general with society.

There is Financial Freedom

The sharing of bills between partners in a relationship lessens the burden of the cost. Financial sharing relieves people from struggling hence reducing stress and major social problems.

Sexual Satisfaction

The sex relations of people in a relationship always change and advances with time. People who are comfortable being with each other will be more sexually intrigued and excited since they can meet their sexual desires. You are also open to trying new things to spice up the relationship, increase the connection, and strengthen the bond.

Gender Equality

A society that embraces monogamous relationships can have respect for every gender; thus, there is gender equality. It also reduces crime cases because so many crimes can come up with polygamous relationships, such as murder cases. Moreover, society will grow since there is a shift of the people finding sexual partners to focus on developing and taking care of their families and children. They will also enhance the growth of their financial sources by doing investments that will cater to their family, both the maternal and paternal.

The Cons of Monogamy

There is a decrease in desires and sexual arousal because when people get used to each other, they can tend to ignore or fore gore their sexual desires. This can result to increased duties in the family and hence have no time to hook up and revive their sexual relationship. The longer you stay without considering your sexual desires can lead to a decrease in your sexual drive.

The level of jealousy in a monogamous relationship is as high as in the other relationship where the people involved can manage their jealousy and hence will not have much impact.

In a monogamous relationship having other sexual partners, which is termed cheating, is seen as unethical and dishonest.

Conclusion

Monogamous relationships are still there today despite technological advancement, which has led to the increased use of sexual toys and human explorations of their sexuality. Morality is seen as anything done against society’s rules. Therefore you still can be a role model in society by doing so many other things that can lead to the growth of the society in general.
