Things That Guys Really Need To Stop Doing

By Ksenia Sobchak

I usually focus on telling women what they can do to smooth out the rough edges of their relationships; what men wish women wouldn’t do. You know, like not staying silent and expecting him to read your mind when you’re upset. I’ll be the first to admit though that men are far from perfect, so it’s time to turn the spotlight on the dudes. Guys, here’s a quick and easy list of things that you seriously need to stop doing.

Watching TV or surfing the web during an important conversation.

This one is a major bugbear for the ladies. If you want to keep her happy, she needs to feel she can talk to you. Men are not generally known for their ability to be good listeners, so if you really want to look like a jerk, keep staring at the screen and nodding and mmhmm-ing as she speaks. Trust me, being able to recite the highlights and important details of what she just said goes a very long way to keeping you out of the dog box.

Insisting on a level of grooming that you aren’t going to reciprocate.

Guys, get real. Much as you’d like your lady to be Brazilian smooth, she’s not likely to indulge your porn-borne expectations while you’re still reluctant to shave or wear deodorant. Nor is she going to dress up in the lingerie and leather that makes you salivate if you’re content to be seen in stained boxers and a tatty T-shirt. Want her to look her best for you? Take a shower, buddy.

Not taking the bait from an obvious attempt to fish a compliment.

Granted, compliment fishing can be annoying. When hearing “Does this dress make me look fat?” for the hundredth time, a guy is tempted to respond with “yes, practically obese” just to see the reaction, but the fact of the matter is that compliment fishing is something all women do, and always will do. Sometimes everyone needs a few kind words, and a bit of flattery goes a long way to keeping her happy. Unless it’s compulsive attention seeking, indulge her; tell her she’s beautiful. You do think so right?

Taking out your frustration on her.

Both genders are guilty of this at times, but guys tend to be the first to snap. A long, hard day at work and a soul-crushing rush hour drive home is no excuse to be moody when she wants a cuddle. If its game day and you’re watching your favourite team get slaughtered, don’t snap at her when she tells you she thinks football is boring.

Never taking the trouble to give little gifts.

Flowers. Flowers do a lot to keep one in a woman’s good books. Men don’t understand the value of cut flowers. We’re into gadgetry and tech, so paying money for something that is going to be wilted in a few days seems crazy. Believe me though, the sentimental value is enormous. Small tokens of affection, no matter how sappy, make one look like a gentleman and keep the spark of romance alive. Just because you’re officially dating doesn’t mean it’s time to stop courting her.

A relationship is a two-way street as they say, so taking the trouble to remember tips like these will go a long way toward keeping your relationship off the rocks.
